For the Sleep Technician, what is cpap,bipap and asv?
CPAP is continuous postive airway pressure (room air blown through a mask covering either the nose or nose and mouth) and it is usually used for people with milder cases of obstructive sleep apnea. Cpap depends on the amount of pressure is needed to clear respiratory events. If the pressure seems intolerable to the patient or they have what is called Central sleep apnea or issues keeping oxygen sats up then we would go to Bipap, which has a pressure that is higher on inhalation and lower on exhalation. This unit seems to be more comfortable due to less pressure when exhaling and the gap in pressure difference acts as a support. The exhalation pressure clears apnea, while the inhalation pressure clears snoring, hypopneas and low o2 sats. ASV is adaptive servo ventilation. This is a very new unit and is absolutely wonderful in treating central and complex sleep apnea. It actually works on your own breathing patterns, adjusting to what you need based on your breathing as an individual and increasing the pressure support based on respiratory events. It is a very complicated and expensive unit. Techs adjust on different settings such as pressure support and maximum inhaltion settings along with exhalation. What Is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)?
Nasal CPAP delivers air into your airway through a specially designed nasal mask or pillows. The mask does not breathe for you; the flow of air creates enough pressure when you inhale to keep your airway open. CPAP is considered the most effective nonsurgical treatment for the alleviation of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
If your otolaryngologist determines that the CPAP treatment is right for you, you will be required to wear the nasal mask every night. During this treatment, you may have to undertake a significant change in lifestyle. That change could consist of losing weight, quitting smoking, or adopting a new exercise regimen.
BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure)(Trade Mark) are effective in preventing intubation and decreasing mortality in patients with Acute Respiratory Failure in properly selected patients.
