Cures For Snoring
Is There a Cure for snoring?
I have to share a room with my mom when we go to the islands on vacation for 7 days. At home her snores can be heard throughout the house(on all 3 levels) So I cannot imagine what it will be like to sleep in the same room. Is there anything that cures snoring (even temporarily)? I love my mom and everything but somethings gotta
give. Thanks for all the help.
The following tips will hopefully give you relief with your mom snoring problems :
1. Elevate your head by sleeping on a thicker pillow or multiple pillows will help reduce your snoring.
2. Don't drink alcoholic beverages, take sleeping pills, tranquilizers, or antihistamines right before going to sleep, they will cause your muscles to relax and limit your air passage way.
3. Avoid dairy products, which can cause mucus build-up right before you go to sleep.
4. If you are overweight, losing some weight will reduce snoring by increasing the space in your air passage way.
5. Sleeping on your side instead of your back will help to prevent snoring.
6. A common remedy to prevent sleeping on your back is to sew a tennis ball to the back of your shirt; the discomfort of sleeping on the ball will prevent you from staying on your back.
7. Try following a regular sleep routine.
8. Try taking in a little bit of honey before sleeping.
9. Don't eat a big meal right before bed, if your stomach is full it will push up on your diaphragm and limit breathing passage ways.
10. Avoid eating "rich" foods such as cakes, cookies, chocolate and pizza.
11. Sleep on a firmer pillow, a pillow that's too soft encourages your throat muscles to relax and narrows your air passageway.
12. Inhale steam before sleeping or sleep in a room with a humidifier turned on, which will reduce congestion and moisturize the throat.
13. Purchase some nasal strips and put them on before going to sleep. Nasal strips will open up your nostrils and allow more air to come in, thus reduce snoring.
14. f you are a smoker, stop smoking, if that is not feasible then avoid smoking right before you go to bed. Smoking causes inflammation and swelling of the throat.
15. Take anti-snoring pills or use anti-snoring nasal spray.
16. Consult a medical profesional if your snoring continues to adversely affect your sleep.

Are there any cures for snoring that really work?
My boyfriend snores LOUDLY and I have to take sleeping pills when we stay together, but I don't want to make that a permanent thing. Those nose strips reduce it, but still it sounds like a herd of wildebeest.
Any tried and tested reducers or cures that you know of?
Both answers above are correct. The person needs a sleep study where they hook up a few monitoring devices and will look at how well he is breathing while sleeping, monitor brainwave activity to detect what stages of sleep he is in, how well his oxygen is doing, etc. They will record all this data, as well as scoring the secerity of his snoring, looking to see if he ever stops breathing, etc, form it into a report, score it, and give all that to a sleep medicine doctor or pulmonologist to be interpreted
To answer your question there is no silver bullet for snoring, mostly CPAP (continious positive airway pressure) will splint the upper airways (throat) open to keep him from snoring. These devices can be expensive if his insurance doesnt cover it, and still expensive even if they do. I know medicare looks for so many average hypopneas per hour before they will reimburse for such machines. Hypopneas are instances where either a certain percentage of airflow is reduced or oxygentation falls by a certain percent. The devices take some getting used to and only about 60% of patients who are given a CPAP device are compliant with it.
There are other things that can cause snoring too like enlarged tonsils, deviated septums, sinus infections, etc than can also cause snoring that can be treated through medications or even surgery if severe enough. He should also see an ENT specialist (ear, nose, and throat). I had a cousin with severely enlarged sublingual tonsils that occluded his airway by 70% when he slept, CPAP would not have helped him, so he had them surgically removed and was in a way "cured".
